What part made you go "wait, what?"
Lots of kids (and adults) are surprised that penguins keep their feet cold on purpose, just warm enough not to freeze.
Where does your body have its own tricks for handling heat or cold, even ones you didn't choose?
Shivering, sweating, goosebumps, hands going pale in the cold. That is your body doing the same kind of thing the penguin does.
what do YOU still want to know?
Great question. Explore it together this week and expand the discussion. We may turn it into a future Pandoy wonder.

The penguin huddle 🐧

Emperor penguins beat the cold the same way we might, by squishing into a big huddle. The middle gets toasty, the edge stays freezing, so they shuffle inward and everyone takes a turn.

  1. Grab whoever's in your family and squish into the tightest huddle you can.
  2. Stay squished and feel how the middle gets warmer the longer you huddle.
  3. Now whoever's on the outside wiggles into the middle, penguin-style. Keep swapping.
Why is taking turns smarter than everyone shoving to the middle?
